SUMMARY:Self-Evident Truths: 10\,000 Portraits of Queer America
DESCRIPTION:iO Tillett Wright shot dozens of images of Hawaii’s LGBTQ+ community in 2015 and his book of portraits of 10\,000 people from all fifty states was released on September 15\, 2020. Read more from publisher Prestel books: \n“In the spirit of Richard Avedon\, this book contains striking photographic portraits of 10\,000 people from across the US\, bringing readers face to face with LGBTQ America. \n\nThe Declaration of Independence states that it is self-evident that we are all created equal. Millions of people in the US\, however\, are deprived of basic rights merely because they aren’t heteronormative. Believing that it’s impossible to deny the humanity of anyone once you look into their eyes\, iO Tillett Wright embarked on an ambitious project to photograph the faces of people across the country who identify as anything other than 100% straight or cisgender. \nThis enormous undertaking—10\,000 people from all fifty states\, shot over a nearly ten-year period—is presented in its entirety in this aweinspiring book. In these pages readers will encounter faces of every complexion\, lined with age or punctuated with piercings\, smiling broadly or deadly serious. While some faces are famous\, most are familiar. \nThey may look like your grandmother\, your neighbor\, your mail carrier\, or your doctor. Each of these images tells a personal story. And each of these stories has the power to transform stereotypes into complex views of a multifaceted group of people. Self Evident Truths asks fundamental questions about identity and freedom while proving that the concepts of sexuality and gender are not black and white. They are 10\,000 beautiful\, bold\, and unapologetic shades of queer.”

SUMMARY:NGLCC Advocacy Alert: SBA Paycheck Protection Program Update
DESCRIPTION:The Biden administration has given the country’s smallest employers two weeks of exclusive access to emergency loans\, in a bid to target aid to minority-owned businesses and other companies that have struggled the most to obtain the funds during the pandemic.\n\nThe Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) provides loans to help businesses keep their workforce employed during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis. Borrowers may be eligible for PPP loan forgiveness.\n\nIn order to reach the smallest businesses\, SBA will offer PPP loans to businesses with 20 or less employees and sole proprietors only from Wednesday\, February 24 through Wednesday\, March 10\, 2021. President Biden has also announced additional program changes to make access to PPP loans more equitable.\n\nSteps to follow\, via the US Small Business Administration:\n\n1. Find a lender:\n\nGet matched with a lender\nSearch for lenders in your area\n\n\n2. Identify a loan:\n\nFirst Draw PPP Loans: If you have not received a PPP loan before\, First Draw PPP Loans are available to you.\nSecond Draw PPP Loans: If you have previously received a PPP loan\, certain businesses are eligible for a Second Draw PPP Loan.\n\n\nReminder: the SBA also offers additional Coronavirus relief.\n\nNote: SBA relief loans/grants are contingent upon requirements being met that are unique to each business/industry. NGLCC is an information resource sharing partner of the SBA\, but we do not provide direct support with applications.

SUMMARY:2020 State Equality Index
DESCRIPTION:The State Equality Index (SEI) is prepared jointly by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and the Equality Federation Institute\, two national LGBTQ advocacy organizations. The SEI treats D.C. as a state. Its rankings place states and D.C. into four categories in the order of the degree of LGBTQ supportive laws and policies that are in place\, the lack of such laws and policies\, and laws and policies considered hostile to LGBTQ people. \nIn addition to D.C.\, Maryland\, and Delaware\, the other states placed in the highest category – called “Working Toward Innovative Equality” – include California\, Colorado\, Connecticut\, Hawaii\, Illinois\, Maine\, Massachusetts Minnesota\, Nevada\, New Hampshire\, New Jersey\, New Mexico\, New York\, Oregon\, Rhode Island\, Vermont\, and Washington. \nAccording to an HRC statement announcing the release of the 2020 SEI\, 27 states have yet to adopt comprehensive non-discrimination laws protecting LGBTQ people\, and LGBTQ people in those states “remain at risk of facing discrimination due to the lack of statutory protections.” \nRead the full 2020 report here.
