SUMMARY:Kōkua Exchange Orientation for Businesses
DESCRIPTION:Kanu Hawaii is launching Kōkua Exchange — their Hawai’i-focused Timebank to support community building\, economic sustainability\, and exchanges of Aloha —  with a series of online orientations. \n• Monday\, April 19\, 2021 – 4PM – 5PM HST\nKōkua Exchange Orientation for Organizations (Virtual Event) \n• Tuesday\, April 20\, 2021 – 5PM – 6PM HST\nKōkua Exchange Orientation for Businesses (Virtual Event) \n• Wednesday\, April 21\, 2021 – 6PM – 7PM HST\nKōkua Exchange Orientation for Community Members (Virtual Event) \nTimebanking\, also known as skillsharing\, is an opportunity that allows the community to ‘barter’ services indirectly with other people by locking their trade/barter hours into the ‘bank’. From there\, they can then cash in on those opportunities in the future. It also acknowledges that everyone has skills to share and trade with others\, and that the community is strengthened when neighbors help one another. \nThe core values of TimeBanking include: Asset\, Redefining Work\, Reciprocity\, Social Networks\, and Respect. It is being practiced around the world as an alternative economic platform that facilitates the exchange of services using time as the currency and creates opportunities for members to: \n\nStrengthen the fabric of our community\,\nServe people and give them a means to serve\, and\nEstablish new relationships and meet vital needs of our community members.\n\nKanu Hawai’i is seeking partnerships and volunteers to help develop our Timebank. Please contact our Timebank Coordinator\, Angel\, at angel@kanuhawaii.org . \nPlease sign-up for Kōkua Exchange at kokuaexchange.timebanks.org BEFORE the day of the event and set up your profile.

SUMMARY:Leading for Equity Impact Workshop Series
DESCRIPTION:Leading for Equity Impact is a six-session workshop series that will invite participants to consider history\, race\, culture\, power\, and privilege through a national\, local\, and personal lens. Participants will grow their knowledge and understanding within their cohort\, moving from awareness to concrete actions that can advance the values of Hawaiʻi\, both in our personal relationships and as leaders and changemakers in our work and communities. \nThe series\, designed and facilitated by Ophelia Bitanga-Isreal\, Principal\, Integridad Consulting; Kuʻulani Keohokalole\, Principal\, People Strategies Hawaiʻi; and Joyce Lee-Ibarra\, Principal\, JLI Consulting\, is open to anyone who wants to learn more about how to create impact that leads to greater equity in Hawaiʻi. \n\n\nSession 1: And So We Begin: Building a Foundation. Develop a foundational understanding of concepts and challenges to meaningfully engage in addressing racial inequities. What are the ideas we agree on\, and what are the ones we struggle with? \n\n\nSession 2: Seeing Our Present in Our Past. Recognize how the history of racism and colonialism play out in our modern-day lives. \n\n\nSession 3: Holding Up a Mirror: Implicit Bias. Explore social norms held in place by implicit bias. How do these biases give power and privilege to some racial/ethnic groups over others? How do our notions about our own identities intersect with our implicit biases? \n\n\nSession 4: Different Window\, Same View: Power & Privilege. Consider the ways that\, even in Hawaiʻi–the most diverse state in the country–many institutions and organizational structures echo racialized power structures on the continent. How do structural racism and/or racist policies reinforce power and privilege dynamics locally? \n\n\nSession 5: Diversity\, Equity & Inclusion in Organizational Systems. Uncover organizational systems that are upholding the status quo and fostering inequitable workplaces. Use an equity framework and tools to closely examine your organizations and develop action plans to begin addressing inequities. \n\n\nSession 6: What Is An Ally? SUMMARY:Pre-Order “The Engagement: America’s Quarter-Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage”
DESCRIPTION:“The road to making same-sex unions legal was much longer than many know. It is a story that begins in Hawaii in 1990\, when a rivalry among local activists triggered a sequence of events that forced the state to justify excluding gay couples from marriage. In the White House\, one president signed the Defense of Marriage Act\, which elevated the matter to a national issue\, and his successor tried to write it into the Constitution. Over twenty-five years\, the debate played out across the country\, from the first legal same-sex weddings in Massachusetts to the epic face-off over California’s Proposition 8 and\, finally\, to the landmark Supreme Court decisions of United States v. Windsor and Obergefell v. Hodges. From churches to hedge funds\, no corner of American life went untouched.” \nStay tuned for more details on book-launch parties\, including an exclusive one here in Hawaii hosted by the Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation and featuring Hawaii’s civil rights pioneers like Daniel Foley\, among others.  \n“On June 26\, 2015\, the United States Supreme Court ruled that state bans on gay marriage were unconstitutional\, making same-sex unions legal throughout the United States. But the road to victory was much longer than many know. In this seminal work\, Sasha Issenberg takes us back to Hawaii in the 1990s\, when that state’s courts first started grappling with the question\, through the emergence of the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 that raised marriage to a national issue\, to the first legal same-sex weddings in Massachusetts\, to the epic face-off over California’s Proposition 8\, and finally to the landmark Supreme Court decisions of Windsor and Obergefell. On June 26\, 2015\, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state bans on gay marriage were unconstitutional\, making same-sex unions legal across the United States. But the road to that momentous decision was much longer than many know. In this definitive account\, Sasha Issenberg vividly guides us through same-sex marriage’s unexpected path from the unimaginable to the inevitable. \n“This richly detailed narrative follows the coast-to-coast conflict through courtrooms and war rooms\, bedrooms and boardrooms\, to shed light on every aspect of a political and legal controversy that divided Americans like no other. Following a cast of characters that includes those who sought their own right to wed\, those who fought to protect the traditional definition of marriage\, and those who changed their minds about it\, The Engagement is certain to become a seminal book on the modern culture wars.” \nTo pre-order “The Engagement”\, click here. \n\n+ GOOGLE CALENDAR+ ICAL EXPORT

SUMMARY:Self-Evident Truths: 10\,000 Portraits of Queer America
DESCRIPTION:iO Tillett Wright shot dozens of images of Hawaii’s LGBTQ+ community in 2015 and his book of portraits of 10\,000 people from all fifty states was released on September 15\, 2020. Read more from publisher Prestel books: \n“In the spirit of Richard Avedon\, this book contains striking photographic portraits of 10\,000 people from across the US\, bringing readers face to face with LGBTQ America. \n\nThe Declaration of Independence states that it is self-evident that we are all created equal. Millions of people in the US\, however\, are deprived of basic rights merely because they aren’t heteronormative. Believing that it’s impossible to deny the humanity of anyone once you look into their eyes\, iO Tillett Wright embarked on an ambitious project to photograph the faces of people across the country who identify as anything other than 100% straight or cisgender. \nThis enormous undertaking—10\,000 people from all fifty states\, shot over a nearly ten-year period—is presented in its entirety in this aweinspiring book. In these pages readers will encounter faces of every complexion\, lined with age or punctuated with piercings\, smiling broadly or deadly serious. While some faces are famous\, most are familiar. \nThey may look like your grandmother\, your neighbor\, your mail carrier\, or your doctor. Each of these images tells a personal story. And each of these stories has the power to transform stereotypes into complex views of a multifaceted group of people. Self Evident Truths asks fundamental questions about identity and freedom while proving that the concepts of sexuality and gender are not black and white. They are 10\,000 beautiful\, bold\, and unapologetic shades of queer.”
