SUMMARY:U.S. Census New Data Visualization: How Do People in Same-Sex Couples Compare to Opposite-Sex Couples?
DESCRIPTION:A new data visualization from the U.S. Census Bureau allows users to explore characteristics of same-sex and opposite-sex married and unmarried couple households at the state level in 2019. Since the visualization is based on ACS data\, only couples that include the householder are reflected. \nThere were roughly 980\,000 same-sex couple households in the United States in 2019 and most were married — around 58% compared to 42% unmarried. Nationally\, 53.4% of people in same-sex married couples were female and 46.6% were male. \nThe U.S. Census Bureau publishes an annual table package on the characteristics of same-sex couple households based on American Community Survey (ACS) data that goes back to 2005.  However\, most of the estimates included in this table package are at the national level. \nContinue reading to learn more about: \n\n2019 state estimates of same-sex and opposite-sex couple households\nDemographic characteristics of same-sex and opposite-sex couples\nSocial characteristics of same-sex and opposite-sex couples\nEconomic characteristics of same-sex and opposite-sex couples

SUMMARY:July 30 – August 15: Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Honolulu Rainbow Film Festival is going virtual again this year\, hosting an online festival from July 30 to August 15\, 2021 on the Honolulu Gay and Lesbian Cultural Foundation’s website. The free event will use films and an interactive talk-story event to highlight the challenges and opportunities faced by Hawaii’s LGBTQ community during the coronavirus pandemic and recent anti-Asian sentiment. \nNew this year\, HRFF becomes a hub of LGBTQ programming for the Asia Pacific region\, as the host of the 2021 Asia Pacific Queer Film Festival Alliance (APQFFA) Short Film Festival. Viewers worldwide will be treated to a showcase of the best short films from the region. \n“In a year of unprecedented discrimination and violence against Asians here in the United States and around the world\, we take special pride in raising the visibility of our Asian and Pacific lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, mahu\, and intersex community through the creative medium of film\,” says board president and programming chair Dean Hamer. \nThe festival will award two prizes: \nAPQFFA GRAND PRIZE- $1000 (awarded by a jury of participating festival programmers) \nAUDIENCE AWARD- $500 (highest view count) \n“We are fortunate to be able to hold such events in Hawai`i without government interference or societal condemnation\, but realize many of our fellow festivals and filmmakers are in a more precarious situation. We hope this event will provide an opportunity for creative\, queer filmmakers from all locations to have their work widely seen and appreciated by the widest possible audience\,” adds board member Brandin Shim. \nHRFF32 community allies are Bank of Hawaii Foundation\, Hula’s Bar & Lei Stand\, Hawai`i Tourism Authority\, Hawaiian Airlines\, and Honolulu Magazine. \nHRFF is one of the longest continually running LGBTQ film festivals in the world\, and has long been noted as a bridge for queer cinema between Hawai`i\, Asia and the Pacific\, and the West. It is presented by the Honolulu Gay and Lesbian Cultural Foundation\, founded in 1997 as a non- profit 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to educate and raise awareness of the community-at-large about gay and lesbian culture\, arts\, and lifestyle\, in honor of Hawai`i LGBTQ pioneer Adam Baran. SUMMARY:Try Think: Hulihia
DESCRIPTION:Try Think events are opportunities for small groups of diverse voices to speak and be heard. Each conversation will be led by a thoughtful facilitator\, to help to create a space where we feel valued as full people. Each conversation topic is inspired by a Value of Hawaiʻi Hulihia essay\, which can be read for free online HERE. \n  \nAn Aloha ‘Āina Economy—Give\, Take\, Regenerate—Mara Mahoney and Seru Tagivakatini\, Facilitators \n“Like the hana of the skilled mahi ʻai and lawaiʻa of old\, an aloha ʻāina circular economy should be based on a give\, take\, regenerate model. Examples are already underway—the Waipā Foundation on Kauaʻi; Heʻeia and West Oʻahu; Hāna\, Maui; Molokaʻi; and in pockets on Hawaiʻi island.” -from the essay\, An Aloha ʻĀina Economy—Give\, Take\, Regenerate\, by Kamanamaikalani Beamer\, from the book\, The Value of Hawaiʻi 3: Hulihia. \nA conversation about aloha ʻāina and circular economies and their impact on Hawaiʻi and beyond. Read the essay by Kamanamaikalani Beamer that was the inspiration for this conversation HERE. Register HERE. \n  \nHaumāna—Noe Tupou\, Facilitator \n“Students have been reminding Hawaiʻi of what is precious\, over and over. And they have always been right. Finally\, we need to listen.” -from the essay\, Haumāna\, by Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwoʻole Osorio\, from the book\, The Value of Hawaiʻi 3: Hulihia. \nA conversation about change\, new ideas and the exciting energy of our haumāna. Read the essay by Jonathan Kay Kamakawiwoʻole Osorio that was the inspiration for this conversation HERE. Register HERE. \n  \nHome Is What We Make It—Ngaio Simmons\, Facilitator \n“For many of the villagers that I got to know on a deeper level\, “home” was defined as “places where you feel like returning to” and “places of safety.” One of the most profound lessons is how people created community not by conspiring against what they disliked\, but by giving others space to define and redefine life for themselves\, by facing precarity as an ‘ohana\, and by confidently sharing aloha even as we faced threats to erase us.” -from the essay\, Home Is What We Make It\, by Tatiana Kalaniʻōpua Young\, from the book\, The Value of Hawaiʻi 3: Hulihia. \nA conversation about new ways to think about houselessness\, belonging\, and showing up for our community. Read the essay by Tatiana Kalaniʻōpua Young that was the inspiration for this conversation HERE. Register HERE.

SUMMARY:Business is Personal – Maintaining Human Connections in a Digital World
DESCRIPTION:More than a year after the pandemic sent most of us working from home\, the wear and tear on individuals is real and starting to show. The biggest contributor to lack of efficiency when working from home is the erosion of relationships. Even as we slowly go back to normal it’s becoming clear that most businesses won’t be going back to the office completely any time soon. \nWhen we are all in the office\, it is easy to interact accidentally. You can grab lunch with a buddy\, you can make jokes in the elevator\, laugh at conversations in passing\, etc. When we work remotely\, this stuff doesn’t really happen. Keeping relationships healthy is a never-ending task but it is essential for a healthy and functional organization. \nIn a world where virtually everything changed overnight\, one thing remains the same: Human connections still drive business. Join CBTS | Hawaiian Telcom’s Jordan Silva\,  Sullivan Family of Companies’ Bryan Cooper and Bay Clinic’s C. Kimo Alameda\, PhD as they explore the effects that technology has had on local businesses as they have quickly adapted to a new way of working. Find out the ways to evolve business practices and use technology to strengthen personal relationships with customers and employees. \n

SUMMARY:Nominations deadline: July 25 | The Business of Pride 2021
DESCRIPTION:Pacific Business News is accepting nominations for their 2021 Business of Pride Awards. PBN is looking for LGBTQ leaders\, companies\, and allies in Hawaii who are successful in their careers\, active in their communities\, and advocates for inclusion and equality. \nThe nomination deadline is Sunday\, July 25\, 2021. Click here to make your nominations. \nTo ensure your nomination is as competitive as possible\, please review the following tips: \n1. Ensure that all areas of the nomination are filled out\, and each question is answered.  The judges can only work off of information provided in the nomination packet and/or letters of support- so if something isn’t listed\, it can’t be considered. \n2. For ease\, feel free to use bullet points\, numbers\, etc. instead of full paragraphs. \n3. The best and most successful nominations include facts and figures\, not opinions.  For example\, let us know how a person or company increased revenue that year and provide numbers\, vs. letting us know that they are “great to work with”. \n4. Letters of support are certainly not required\, but can be very helpful to our panel of judges. \n5. Make sure the nomination is submitted on time. \nPlease contact Rose Balagtas at rbalagtas@bizjournals.com or (808)955-8072 with any questions.
